How to Choose a Hotel in New york
Choosing a good hotel in New York for your next trip is one of the most important tasks you will do during the planning of your visit. One bad decision could turn your dream vacation into a nightmare.
One of the first questions we ask ourselves before traveling to New York or any other destination is:
How and where do I find a good hotel? 🤔
What many will say is that getting accommodation is complicated, but in reality it is not, what is difficult and even exhausting is finding the ideal place that suits your needs. There really isn’t a manual with rules to follow, it all depends on what your needs, expectations and available budget are.
In New York there are certain specific guidelines to take into account, the city is so full of opportunities of all kinds and for all tastes, as well as hotels and lodging options, where not always the price equals quality.
Today we bring you a list of tips to help you make the best choice, regardless of your tastes and budget.
Tips for choosing a Good Hotel in New York City
What Do I Want To Do?
The first step before you start looking for a hotel is to determine what you want to do in New York, what is your plan? Do you travel alone, with your partner or with children? The scenario changes according to the conditions in which you are going to travel.
Maybe you’ve visited the city before and prefer to relax a little more, or you might not care so much about the hotel, since all you’ll do is sleep there. For many of us, the best option might be a hotel with certain amenities, while for others the most important thing is the location and/or the cost per night.
Choose your time of year very carefully; hotel rates vary throughout the year. When the city receives more visitors, the lower-ranking hotels tend to raise their prices as much or even higher than the luxury hotels themselves, so it is very important that you NEVER evaluate the quality of a hotel by its price per night.
During the first months of the year in winter, from January to mid-March, it is easier to find good rates, followed by summer, from July to August. In the Fall and part of Winter, particularly in November and December, rates rise because demand increases with Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve festivities.
Location and Public Transportation
Public transportation in New York is quite inexpensive and takes you practically anywhere you need to go. Staying in a hotel not as central as Midtown, Manhattan, is not an inconvenience at all. Train travel from Uptown or Downtown, to places like Times Square in Midtown, takes about 15-20 minutes.
That’s why we recommend staying near Central Park, from where you can easily access all the attractions of the city quickly.
However, we have to recognize that staying out of town has its benefits, such as the low cost and opportunity to explore New York more thoroughly. There are also disadvantages, mainly the travel time to and from Manhattan, or having to come back at the end of the day exhausted or carrying all your shopping bags.
We suggest that if this is your first time in New York, start looking for hotels near Central Park, so you have a better base to start exploring. Otherwise, be sure to choose a hotel that is located in close proximity to at least one or more of the subway or bus lines arriving in the city.
This is an extremely important aspect that many travelers do not take into account. Whether we like it or not, situations can always arise that force us to cancel or change our travel plans.
Check the conditions and cancellation policy of the hotel you choose beforehand. If you cancel or make any changes to your reservation, it is essential that you make sure you do not lose your money.
Some hotels have flexible policies, while others charge you fines or only refund a partial amount of what you initially paid.
When evaluating a hotel in New York we must be clear about what is included in the rate per night, regardless of how the room and bathroom are. Even with the same prices per night, two hotels can be differentiated by the amenities they offer.
Some places include free breakfast, internet (WiFi) and even parking. All this in the end can generate significant savings, just take out the costs of breakfast daily at a restaurant or cafes in New York and you’ll see what’s worth checking out first.
We’ll mention it again, don’t trust the quality of a hotel for its price, but instead check the reviews that other users have given about the hotel.
To view this information, check out specialized websites such as TripAdvisor or Booking.com, where each location is rated according to travelers’ opinions. Both tools allow you to filter by rating, area, hotel category, price and others.
Many hotels in New York offer constant discounts throughout the year. These offers are usually temporary or only for a limited number of reservations, so they are often overlooked by travelers.
We advise you to use travel search engines such as Booking.com or Hotelscombined.com, which are always up to date and list prices of all hotels with discounts, along with photos and user reviews. This gives you an excellent basis for finding accommodation, according to your needs and saving you a few dollars.

Central Park, New York
Central Park is a 341-hectare American green space (3.41 km², approximately 4 kilometres by 800 meters), located in the borough of Manhattan in New York, New York. It is managed by the Central Park Conservancy, which has an annual budget of $ 200 million and is maintained in the same way as other green spaces in the city by the New York City Department of Health.
Completed in 1873 after thirteen years of construction, according to the plans of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux (also at the origin of Brooklyn Prospect Park), Central Park represents a green oasis in the middle of Manhattan’s skyscraper forest although it is located on the north side of the island where the buildings are a little lower. It is bounded by 110th Street North, 8th Avenue West, 59th Street South and 5th Avenue East. These streets are named Central Park North, Central Park West and Central Park South respectively, and the park is flanked by two residential neighbourhoods: the Upper East Side (east) and the Upper West Side (west). With 37.5 million visitors a year, Central Park is the most visited park in the United States.
Its natural appearance is the result of extensive landscaping: the park contains several artificial lakes (the largest of which, the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir covers 0.43 km2), 3 footpaths, two skating tracks on the ice, a wilderness protection area and lawns to practice sports and outdoor games. A 9.7 km long road, relatively uninhabited by motorists, surrounds the park. It can be used by pedestrians, cross-country runners, cyclists or roller skaters, especially at weekends and on weekdays after nineteen hours, when traffic is completely forbidden.
Central Park is the first large public park to be built in an American city. The project of a large green space located in the heart of New York was not part of the Commissioners’ Plan of 1811, a large cadastral plan at the origin of the current cutting off the streets. In 1830, New York City became the largest city in the United States, with about 200,000 inhabitants. By 1850, most New Yorkers reside south of 38th Street in overcrowded, noisy neighbourhoods, and the residents have only a few green spaces, often cemeteries, such as the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
When the city of New York began to expand to the north of the island of Manhattan in the nineteenth century, several voices raised to claim the creation of a green space, like the Bois de Boulogne in Paris (completed in 1852) or Hyde Park in London. Among those calling for the construction of a park are landscape architect Andrew Jackson Downing, and writers like George Bancroft and Washington Irving.
By 1850, the designated land was covered with swamps, strewn with large rocks and occupied by many squatters, including goats and pigs, sometimes using space as a dump. The first works began accordingly only in 1857 when Olmsted was appointed a superintendent of Central Park. They lasted a total of nineteen years and the 150th anniversary of the park was celebrated in 2003. It was thus necessary to destroy 300,000 cubic meters of rocks with explosives, drain the marshland and bring three million cubic meters of earth. 1,500 workers worked fourteen hours a day to plant some 500,000 trees.
The site, completed in 1869, cost the lives of five workers, and the construction and earthworks at Central Park cost the equivalent of $ 500 million. The construction of the park also posed the problem of evacuating the various inhabitants of the park’s construction site, who were mostly poor with a majority of African-Americans and immigrants of Irish or German origin.
The buildings on the Upper West Side, located at the edge of the park are among the most famous buildings in New York, and also among those with the highest rent in Manhattan. Among these famous buildings, the Dakota Building, located at 72nd Street, has been the home of many famous artists, including Lauren Bacall, Judy Garland and Leonard Bernstein. His most famous resident, however, was John Lennon, who was murdered in front of the building’s entrance in 1980.
Yoko Ono also lived there and was walking on the Strawberry Fields esplanade, dedicated to John Lennon. Other well-known buildings are also located near Central Park: San Remo Apartments, Eldorado, Beresford and Majestic, all built by Emery Roth. John Kennedy, the President’s son, came to play Frisbee at Central Park21. Prestigious visitors to the park include Woody Allen and Michael Douglas; actors Richard Kind and George Clooney were married in Central Park.
Things to do in Central Park
Visiting Central Park is one of the must-go activities to do on your first trip to New York. This huge fountain is a popular meeting place for many New Yorkers. In the late afternoon, the atmosphere is particularly bucolic and relaxing. It is also a very romantic place for a romantic moment! Do not miss the beautiful arcades of the passage leading to the fountain, the decor is beautiful and you can make beautiful pictures.
This huge tree-lined alley also appears in many movies shot in New York. In summer, there are many street artists, ice cream sellers, instrument players etc. This is a great place to come to rest on a bench in the shade on a hot day.
Sheep Meadow is a huge expanse of grass that offers breathtaking views of all the buildings of Midtown and Central Park West! In fine weather, many New Yorkers come to picnic, relax with a book, sunbathe, play kite ... Be warned, the weekend (especially on Sunday), the crowds are at the rendezvous.
This pretty little castle is located in the middle of Central Park and is open every day from 10 am to 5 pm (except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day). From the castle, you have a beautiful view of the park, the pond of Tortle Pond and the buildings of the city. J
This is the meeting point for joggers from Central Park who also appears often in movies and series! Wollman Rink (or Trump Rink) and Lasker Rink
These two outdoor rinks in Central Park are a must during the winter months. Wollman Rink, located south of Central Park is much touristier than Lasker Rink, located to the north of the park. The view of the buildings of Midtown is simply superb, day and night! Be careful, the ice rinks are not always open to the public, some time slots are reserved for classes or the reception of schools and recreation centers.
Central Park Zoo
To do especially if you have children. For fans, the big New York Zoo is located further north in the Bronx. You will come across some typical and iconic animals in North America (brown bears,) and even a small Children's Zoo section with farm animals. Count a half day of visit.

History of Central Park
In 1849, a group of wealthy New Yorkers looking out over the magnificent public parks of London and Paris, led by businessman Robert Minturn, began pulling the strings to build America’s first public park. These gentlemen believed that a large park in New York would give the city an international reputation and offer families an attractive space to enjoy and workers a healthy place to spend a moment of the day. They also thought that such parks would increase the value of land and lead to the development of the lower classes.
After years of discussions about the park’s location, size and cost, the legislature allowed the city to buy more than 700 hectares of land in downtown Manhattan. The site is flanked by 106th Street, Fifth Avenue, 59th Street and 8th Avenue (later extended to 110th Street). The uneven terrain, full of swamps, cliffs and rocky outcrops, made the land unsuitable for building construction.
In 1857 the Central Park Commission launched a competition for the construction of this great lung of the city. The project was won by Frederic Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux.
His “Greensward Plan” was a combination of the picturesque and formal (the parks dressed as Promenade and the terrace of Bethesda) pastoral (open rolling meadows) in the English romantic tradition.
The work began with topographic work in the summer of 1856 and was largely completed in 1866. The park has undergone numerous renovations over the years, most notably with the addition of playgrounds and recreational ball courts in the 1930s by Park Director Robert Moses with WPA resources. In the 1970s, the park’s security and maintenance were greatly reduced with the city’s fortune until the park was taken over by the Central Park Conservancy, a public/private entity. But through all these adjustments, the layout and fundamental objective of the park have remained unchanged, favoring the city as a green lung and a relief of the concrete and steel cliffs.
